New research reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these drugs should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
